Hard-Wired for Justice: The Neuroscience of Persuasion and Punishment
We will explore whether we are hard-wired to forgive and punish, how courts and juries have evolved to accommodate, honor, and restrain these tendencies, and how human nature might affect those who make decisions about responsibility and accountability.
Be sure to bring your cell phone to participate in audience polling via text messaging throughout the morning session!
Part I: Responsibility and Persuasion
We will start with a background primer on neuroscience, and then consider the science as it relates to persuasion, bias, empathy and decision-making. Be prepared to participate as we use live demonstrations, audio-visual presentations and audience polling to explore whether we are hard-wired for justice, and if the brain can be influenced to produce just outcomes.
This fast-moving panel will consider what neuroscience may be teaching us about public and private intuitions of justice, for assigning blame and punishment, and the nature of intention. We will use a case study and live audience polling to decide what role scientific evidence, forgiveness, and victims' rights have in achieving justice.
